What is SEO? I get this question A LOT from realtors that are looking to improve their digital marketing game. It’s a question that I think needs a good, simple answer because it is extremely important if you own a website and want to have sustainable traffic to it. I think you need both 😉
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and is a process of gaining natural visibility in search engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo!
Fundamentally, SEO appears to be a simple process but it can be mind boggling to many when you consider all the factors that really go into it. From the way your site and content are structured to inbound/outbound links to keywords to the age of your site and many other factors…improving your search engine ranking takes time and consistent discipline.
For realtors SEO matters. Local SEO is even more important.
Why is local SEO so important?
The most appealing reason why local SEO is important is because you don’t have to pay (organic) to be found in the search engine results. Depending on what keywords you rank for, you could score huge if your site is optimized for search engines.
Additionally, people are typing in what they need or want in the search bar. This is called intent. If your site comes up early in the rankings, most likely the search engine has matched their keyword or phrase with your website or webpage. This results in a higher conversion rate.
Google and other search engines are essentially playing match maker to people in your area.
How does SEO work?
Search engines such as Google seem to spit out very relevant results these days. They just get us.
However, search engines are still bots.
The search engines have what they call web crawlers that scrape and gather all of the information that can be found on the world wide web.
Subsequently, an index is built from all the information that was collected. The index is then delivered through the search engine algorithms (which is highly complex by the way) and tries to match the most appropriate user query.

My best advice to increase the quality of SEO for your site is to write relevant and consistent content that is in high demand for your audience. In later posts, we’ll talk about length of the copy, meta tags, links, etc.
